Description

Last Gambit photo until I have a shoot with Rogue (and hopefully a shoot with more X-Men~). I swear. :3 This is just because I FINALLY have the costume information up.

This picture is from cronecosplay.com.

---

Gambit was one of those costumes where I needed an additional outlet for my fangirlism. The costume was on the backburner, however, for one of those far-down-the-lines outfits, until I got a surprise pair of scelra (or, more accurate, a surprise 300 dollars that I was to use for said contacts, so that they were measured properly and all). A lot more work went into the costume than I was expecting, and already several parts are retired, waiting repairs or replacements.

The pants are always first. And usually the easiest part. This was no exception. The pants are made probably bluer than they are in some of the comics, but that’s because I was going off one story arc when I got the fabric – they didn’t appear as gray until later issues than what I was working from. Not much to say, just my generic pants pattern with an elastic waist. They’re actually not properly hemmed yet, since I was running short on time and the bottoms are deep in the boots anyhow.

The shirt gave me some trouble. We used an altered jacket pattern, made to fit more tightly. I used an invisible zipper down the front, since in all the pictures there appears to be a line down the front – this gave the exact appearance of that line as well as making it easy to take on and off. The bottom was altered heavily because Gambit has weird outfits. It came down lower in the front than the sides, and then had some of the fabric from the pants used to bind the shirt’s bottom hem. The same fabric was used to make the details on the shoulders and down the front of the shirt. They’re folded over so they stand out more and the open side is tacked down to the shirt. It took FOREVER to get those in the right places.

The jacket came next and took the longest time. It’s a lot heavier than it appears due to the quilted fabric lining it. I opted for a fabric rather than vinyl, PVC, or pleather due to comfort and the fact that they look kinda silly. I went with more of a brown because that’s how it appears in some of the issues and looked better than that orange color it often is. The jacket was made from two jacket patterns spliced together. The inside lining was made quilted because that texture always appeared in the pictures. It had to be custom dyed, and I think it came out pretty close to the right color. I used coverable buttons for all the buttons and attached each group with one thread in hopes of keeping it stronger –alas, I lost both of the buttons on one of my shoulders. I also added metal D-ring details to the cuffs, and several fabric details on the shoulders and cuffs. I still have to give the lined appearance to the lapel and collar.

The gloves were a new experience entirely, as I’d never made a pair of proper gloves before. We tried a LOT and in the end, the gloves still came out awful. They’re already retired. When I make a new pair, they’re going to snap into the inside of the shirt sleeve so I don’t have anymore instances of the glove slipping down. There were silver bracelets attached to the gloves as per the comics, but those are probably moving to the outside of the shirt sleeve. The hood is also being replaced with an altered diving mask – this one is made from the same pattern as my ninja hood for Metrochess and is far too thick. It attaches at the neck with Velcro and is doubled fabric-wise.

The boots… *shudders* Never again with the boot covers. Never again. I wasted two invisible zippers on those. They were made of gray vinyl and made from a heavily altered boot cover for a LOTR costume. They zipped up the back and were supposed to be sewn onto the base shoe, but that didn’t work. Nor did gluing it down, so I went with my dumb idea – elastic straps. D: They had snapped by the end of the weekend. And the seams all puckered due to the thick fabric. I’m trying to find a pair of boots to alter and paint now.

The staff wasn’t difficult – just PVC pipe painted, with Crayola Model Magic pushed into the ends and smoothed to look, well, more staffish. And the paint actually didn’t come off, which was a real surprise. Making the cards was a LOT of fun. I don’t have any pictures yet of one set, but I had a few that were surrounded by purple energy (…okay, printed paper) and looked pretty cool. The burned ones were just fun to make, and I’m especially fond of the burnt-out ace of hearts.

My biggest problem with this costume (besides any outfit difficulties) is that I have to grow out the short part of my hair, and I hate wearing that part longer than my ears. The contacts are also a bit bothersome – much more so than my Dream contacts. They are full eye and do make for an amazing effect, but they get uncomfortable after a while and are difficult to put in. I do enjoy the reactions of others, however, and I love how it looks, though it doesn’t always show up well in photos.

I need to get more concise with these costume descriptions.

Is it weird that I say the carpet in this image and was like "Megacon! That person was at a Megacon!"

then I clicked the image thumb nails and verified that...
